Who We Are

Mission: To improve the quality of life and eliminate poverty by helping people achieve housing stability and financial security.

FHAS is a local not-for profit tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization established in 1968 to increase homeownership opportunities. FHAS has been a HUD-certified comprehensive housing counseling agency since 1970, and by 1971 became the only HUD-certification comprehensive housing counseling agency in the Omaha metropolitan area. FHAS quadrupled in size to meet the growing demand for housing counseling services, and has locations in North Omaha, South Omaha, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

What We Do

Family Housing Advisory Services exists to stabilize vulnerable families, address poverty-related issues and help people reach new versions of themselves where they are financially thriving, building wealth and on track to leave legacies for future generations.

FHAS services are built upon the pillars of education and counseling through which we address the root causes of poverty. Our services are HUD-certified ensuring high-quality strategies that are proven to holistically address housing and poverty-related needs.

As a dedicated housing counseling agency, our reach extends well beyond shelter or pantry services. We proudly serve those barely escaping shelters and pantries but nonetheless struggling, to those chronically at risk of homelessness to those preparing to invest in homeownership.

FHAS’ service coalesces to improve financial and housing outcomes for our community’s most underserved and disadvantaged populations. We bring together financial education, coaching and counseling to help people improve their finances, increase their income, become banked, work towards paying off debt, improving their credit, and begin saving money and making investments for the future. In addition, a partnership with a local financial institution has helped our clients to become banked, enroll in IDA programs, and complete the program to receive matching funds. Working together with financial institutions, our clients have established mainstream banking relationships, purchased homes, refinanced auto loans, received credit card approvals and evolved their finances and wealth.

Our housing education and counseling services, help families plan for and navigate the road to homeownership. FHAS understands the critical role of owning a house in creating wealth and providing the next generation with a transferrable wealth asset.  We work with clients to educate on homeownership, addressing misunderstanding and knowledge given that many of our clients have experienced increases in monthly housing expenses—including rent, utilities, and additional fees—there are notable gaps that need to be addressed. We provide counseling to help navigate challenges and ensure clients are accompanied and supported at all stages of their journeys.
