Who We Are
Mission: To meet the needs of Omaha’s refugee community through empowerment, education, and advocacy partnerships.
Restoring Dignity is composed of passionate and dedicated humans who are committed to bringing lasting change and hope to local refugees. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit located in Omaha, Nebraska, who actively advocate for the human dignity of our refugee population by providing critical resources that both relieve suffering and enable resettled families to thrive in their new environments. Everything that we do stems from our belief that someone needs to see the needs of refugees in our community and then something needs to be done.
Restoring Dignity began in July 2012, after the tragic death of a young South Sudanese refugee woman spurred community members to begin providing resources to struggling refugee families. What began as a one-time event to help her family soon turned into an organization that has grown exponentially. To date, Restoring Dignity has served thousands of refugees in the Omaha, Nebraska area, by providing them with much-needed household items and education. Our specialty is bringing the community of Omaha together to serve the needs of the many refugee families who now call Omaha home.
What We Do
We provide a wide variety of supportive services to families who came to America with refugee status:
- Our Welcome Home Education Program is a first of it’s kind! We teach one-on-one in-home classes, in the language of the family, and explain how to use Western products to keep a home clean as well as home & fire safety education and home owners’ maintenance education.
- Restoring Dignity started with a home-makeover for one family and has since completed these transformations for dozens of families.
- Every summer, we accept donations of window air conditioning units, and then install them in the homes of families without any means of cooling their homes.
- Our on-staff housing advocate provides much-needed services to help tenants resolve their issues with landlords.
