Led by United Way of the Midlands staff, volunteers will assemble and pack up 2,000 kits for delivery to Heart Ministry Center. A program and luncheon catered by Big Mama's Kitchen will follow the volunteer opportunity.
Tasks include:
- Writing encouragement cards
- Assembling Snack Pack kits
- Assisting with boxing completed kits
- Breaking down cardboard
Reasonable accommodation will be made upon request.
To honor Dr. King's legacy, there are 64 volunteer spots available.
- In 1964, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his non-violent struggle for civil rights for the Afro-American population".
- The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. This act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964, prohibited discrimination in public places, provided for the integration of schools and other public facilities, and made employment discrimination illegal. It was the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.
