As of May 2026, some Nebraska Medicaid members may be required to complete 80 hours per month of work, education or volunteering to keep their coverage. Work requirements ordered by federal legislation only apply to those who enrolled in the Medicaid expansion, which began in Nebraska in 2020. Certain individuals may qualify for exemptions.
Volunteering with an approved nonprofit is one way to meet this requirement while giving back to the community. As these changes take shape, Nebraska Medicaid is working with federal partners to define what qualifies as community service and how participation will be documented.
United Way of the Midlands is working alongside community partners to help prepare for what’s ahead — connecting individuals to meaningful volunteer opportunities as more guidance becomes available. Our focus is on making it easier for people to engage in service in ways that support both their individual needs and the strength of our community.
We will continue to share updates as more information is confirmed and remain committed to helping our community navigate these changes with clarity and connection.
