Volunteer Opportunities From: United Way of the Midlands

Volunteer: Conversation Partner/Literacy Tutor (In person)

Learning for ALL (LFA) has two tutoring programs to best meet the needs of all students. Tutors are needed for both programs.

Conversation Partners is best for:

High beginner to advanced level ESL studentsStudents who want to focus on improving speaking and listening skillsStudents who want to learn about the United States and their communityStudents who want a more informal approach to learning English

Literacy Tutoring is best for:

Low beginner to Advanced level studentsStudents who want to focus on reading and writing skillsStudents who want to use a structured curriculum in their lessonsStudents who have time to do homework

We ask that tutors meet with their students at least once a week for an hour. Tutors agree to work with their students for three months and are welcome to continue beyond if interested. Tutors and students are paired based on their availability and preferences. Tutors are provided with an orientation and a curriculum prior to meeting with their student. Students and tutors meet at a public location such as a library study room or at the UNO CEC building. This is a great opportunity to help adults achieve their life goals and build a stronger community!

Volunteer: ESL Assistant Teacher

LFA and CIRA are looking for a volunteer assistant teacher for new ESL class that begins in January. A curriculum and lead teacher are in place, so the volunteer's role will be to provide additional assistance to lower-level students and assist the lead teacher as needed. This will be a multi-level ESL class with a maximum of 20 adult students. 

Classes will be held Tuesdays and Fridays from 10-11:30 AM at the Willa Cather Library branch (1905 S 44th St) from January-May 2026. This is a great opportunity to support adult English learners and refugees in your community!
